Suicide prevention is an important proactive measure that the Haddis Girma Continuity Foundation undertakes in order to preserve the mental health of newly arriving African immigrant populations, and in particular, those within the Ethiopian community. Thus far, we have organized community forums where mental health professionals conducted workshops and organized trainings with the goal of raising awareness with this vital issue. In addition to the work that the foundation has already done, we continue to identify culturally competent service providing agencies and experts to support individual community members who demonstrate need for intervention. The members of the Haddis Girma Continuity Foundation understand that personal connections and proper preparations are necessary in order to effectively prevent, identify and treat mental health problems. Therefore, our cultural competency initiatives include religious, spiritual and professional group and individual counseling in multiple languages.
